Skin cancer treatment without surgery: Photodynamic therapy
Photodynamic Therapy is a technique that is performed on an outpatient basis in the clinic’s facilities and allows the treatment of pre-malignant lesions (Actinic Keratosis) and superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma without the need for surgery or anesthesia.
The procedure consists in the preparation of the area to be treated with a scraping and the subsequent application of the topical drug that is allowed to act for three hours. During this time, the active substance selectively penetrates into the tumor cells causing the tumor to become sensitive to red light.
Subsequently, the treatment is performed with the photodynamic lamp. When malignant cells are illuminated with the light of photodynamic therapy, as they are sensitive to light they are destroyed.
The great advantage of this technique is that it eliminates the pre-malignant lesion by respecting healthy cells at all times and without the need for surgery. Normally, are required two sessions.
